“Throughout our nation’s history, the United States has often been defined by the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” — meaning “Out of many, we are one.” President Trump’s proposed public charge regulation betrays everything our country should stand for.

By punishing families for accessing healthy food, health care, and housing, the regulation would make the United States sicker, hungrier, and poorer. Our diversity is our nation’s strength. Our country is stronger when we join together across racial differences, like we’ve done in our past in fighting for civil rights or better wages and working conditions.

I strongly oppose the Department of Homeland Security’s shameful proposed rule change to “public charge.” Withdraw it immediately.”
